I just found this the other day while looking for versions of WRS. Wonderful show! Highlights are the WRS > LiG > DS > China Doll, but lots of gems scattered throughout: Loser, Row Jimmy, NFA > GDTRFB ...

http://www.archive.org/details/gd74-05-14.sbd.murphy.1823.sbeok.shnf

For some reason, the start of WRS always reminds me of this gorgeous song by Youssou N’Dour. I have no idea what he’s singing, but it sure sounds lovely:

Anyway, does anyone have suggestions for don’t-miss WRSs? I’m partial to 12/18/73 ...

... but I’ve never looked concertedly. I’m on a bit of a WRS kick right now (unless it switches to a Youssou N’Dour kick), so ... any favorites to share?

Jerry fans MUST hear 7/29/74 - amazing melodic jam that does not let up once! my new favorite...and its also a great show overall too, nice 2nd set jams

and i also agree that 7/19/74 is probably the best ever though there are others i have been enjoying more lately, such as this one.

I really enjoy the WRS from DP12, 6-28-74 Boston Garden. The jam out of LiG is truly epic.

6/28/74 with the MLB is my favorite, but the 11/11/73 version might be the most perfect. I don't like the 06/18/74 rendition as much as others, but it certainly is well played.

Not sure where this one ranks, but it's a good one with a cool little Spanish Jam.

Speaking of 7-19-74, I have to share what I consider to be one of the great reviews on the site. Below is a review of a show with killer jammed out versions of Weather Report, Eyes, and Playin, and a number of other good tunes, including a top Scarlet. Agnt1831 wrote:

That's really funny. Takes all kinds. One of my favorite reviews is on a YouTube vid; the reviewer complains about the band's choice of clothing in the 80s, on the grounds that in the earlier years they were really hip. And it seems serious.

I agree, 12/18/73 is my favorite performance of WRS as well. It may not be as "perfect" as the Freedom Hall rendition from 6/18/74, but the approach is way more creative. As great as the Kentucky WRS is, there are a few that I enjoy quite a bit more, including the Selland Arena performance that fireeagle mentioned.

I'd go with the Eaton sourced Miller remaster of 12/18/73 though...

Yes, Freedom Hall, Louisville, KY 6/18/74 is an Awesome version of this beautiful song. If you have Road Trips vol. 2, no. 3, this is the best you can get. I also love the Miami Jai Alai Fronton show from 6/23/74. There are many different ones available to choose from here, including several soundboards and Matrices. I will pass on trying to say which is "best" because I haven't actually compared one to the next for this show, but the band is kicking and the sound quality is great on the ones I have tried. I've heard the Chris Chappell Sick Bits Matrix and the Hunter Seamons Matrix and both are great jobs at giving a helping of that room sound to the wonderful soundboard. I also love listening to the soundboard version, and I don't think you could go wrong with Crib's version right here:

I hardly have any RTs, actually, but I do have that one. Really gorgeous. Hmmmm, now I have to do comparisons! (Or intend to, and then actually just get sucked into listening uncritically :-) )

Great list, guys -- thanks! Wonder why they stopped doing the whole suite? Would I be right to think they did it until the hiatus and then just never brought it back? I'm thinking that other tunes just fulfilled the "suite need" at that point, and maybe the prelude/part I were too constraining ... really like them, though.

I'm guessing that in returning from hiatus, they had to decide what they were going to bring back along with the new material, and stuff like WRS part 1 and the outro jam from Eyes didn't make the cut. Perhaps they felt they'd been played to death in 73-74. What disappoints me more than dropping WRS part 1 was dropping some of the more adventurous material, such as Blues for Allah and Stronger Than Dirt, without even giving it a chance to develop, not to mention not playing Unbroken Chain until Jerry was too decrepit to handle it.

yes the 6/18 is surely a great version. Have a tape of the Selland show for years. But the 6/28 Boston Garden show is special. Good WRS OF course, but the jam that it leads into is what it's all about! Mlb, Dark Star tease, space. Always loved that WRS. Such a treat to listen to.

Missoula is a great listen.

For WRS, i think this is my favorite and it has the added bonus that it is part of a WRS>Stella combo:

Apparently bobby got hit in the face with a thrown beer bottle at that show.
I Really like the bounce in scarlet too.

I got backstage passes unexpectedly gifted to me while walking into a Dylan show at the Harry Adams fieldhouse in Missoula.

i've got a soft spot for 12.02.73, but i guess i like the tighter, better played versions as opposed to the sloppy messes from 74 everyone has been recommending....jk

it's on dicks pick 14. there are 2 wrs's on 14, the good one is the second one. ;)
